Rural Signals

A documentary film collaboratively filmed in New York City and a village in Eastern China, focusing on the social lives of a specific demographic: villagers born between 1945 and 1965 (now 60–80 years old) in northern Zhejiang Province, near Shanghai. Most are lifelong farmers who never formally “retired,” and many are semi-literate, having left school before completing elementary education. With younger family members working or living in towns and cities, these elders spend much of their time with peers from the same village, forming tight-knit social circles that define their daily lives.
